Aggies edged out in a thriller

They say the past is another country, but in that other country several long-serving Aggies are doing very nicely, thank you very much.

The years rolled away on Thursday night as Neil “Fred” Gillespie and Conor McLean produced performances that had me wondering if they had found a time machine and brought the 2006 versions of themselves back to Davitt Park.

Fred intercepted passes with a reliability that the Royal Mail could only envy, but the star of the show was Big Slim, who plundered 3-3 from play and still found enough generosity in his heart to leave the same again behind him!

In a fabulous end-to-end match that swayed one way and then the other, we lost by two points after a tremendous second-half burst brought us from seven points down to lead by one. Alas, time caught up with tired legs and a younger Davitts team prevailed in a tight finish.

Oisín McKenna gave his best performance yet in the old black and white, while Briondan McLarnon was like the Scarlet Pimpernel—here, there and everywhere. He even occasionally showed up at full-back, where he had been selected to play.

Conor McGoran and Barry McCrea also showed strongly. While Declan McLarnon, coming on as a second-half substitute, did nothing to lower the average age of the team, he raised its IQ by more than a few points.

A great end to the year for South Antrim. Roll on 2027!

On a personal note, thanks to Hal and Briondan for keeping the show on the road during my occasional holidays.

U16 Girls’ Championship · Tuesday 8 September 2026

St Agnes / Éire Óg 2-3
St Enda’s 4-15

A tough outing for our U16 girls today as they came up against a very strong St Enda’s team.

Although the result did not go our way, the girls can be extremely proud of their performance. Every player gave her absolute best from start to finish, showing great determination, teamwork and a fantastic attitude.

They battled for every ball and never gave up, even as St Enda’s kept the scoreboard ticking over. There were plenty of positive moments throughout the game, and the girls showed just how much they have developed as a team.

Well done to every single player who fought right to the end and was rewarded with some late consolation scores. 👏

We may not have got the result we wanted, but the effort, commitment and team spirit were outstanding. Keep your heads up, girls—there is plenty more to come! 💪

Good luck to St Enda’s in the rest of the championship.

Girls’ Go Games · Saturday 12 September 2026 · Lámh Dhearg

A fantastic morning for our young Aggies 👏

Our U8 and U10 girls took part in today’s Go Games at Lámh Dhearg.

The U8s won every game against Lámh Dhearg, St Enda’s and Éire Óg, and they were fantastic throughout. They displayed all the skills they have been practising in training.

The girls moving up this year made sure the newer and younger players were fully involved and felt part of every game.

Our U10s also came through some very physical games against Lámh Dhearg, Davitts and Éire Óg. Fourteen girls played, with several others missing, which shows the unbelievable numbers and strength within this group.

At times it felt more like WWE than Go Games and the girls could easily have been awarded frees every couple of minutes! Despite that, they showed tremendous maturity, never complained and produced dominant performances against every team. 💪

We are incredibly proud of all the girls. Well done! 🖤🤍
